The Academy of Korean Studies has announced its 23rd Summer Program for International Students. This intensive summer program for undergraduate students was developed in furtherance of the Academy’s mission “to cultivate young leaders, who can contribute to the development of Korean studies.” The program is composed of components such as lectures on Korea, intensive Korean language instruction, field trips, excursions, and traditional cultural activities. Since its beginning in 1993, some 637 students from 45 countries have attended the program, according to the Academy.
The 2015 summer program will run for four weeks, from Monday, July 13, to Friday, August 7. Except for some English lectures, most of the program will be in Korean. Therefore participants need to possess basic Korean language skills. The program is open to undergraduate students of second year or above from universities abroad who are majoring or minoring in Korean studies and those who have taken Korea-related lectures from their universities. Graduate students and students who hold Korean nationality are not eligible for this program.
Applications are being accepted from January 12 to February 27, 2015. Applications received after that deadline will be not considered.
Applications require submission of a six-page application form, which can be downloaded at http://www.aks.ac.kr; official university transcripts; a “Korean Proficiency Evaluation Sheet,” included in the application form; two letters of reference (to be sent directly to firstname.lastname@example.org by the recommenders; and, optionally, a Score Report for Korean Proficiency Test. All documents should be written in Korean or English. Otherwise, a certified translation of the document into Korean or English should be added.
All documents except the letters of reference should be combined into one PDF file and sent by e-mail to email@example.com with the subject line: Application Documents for the 23rd AKS Summer Program for International Students_Name of the Applicant.
Results will be announced individually via e-mail on March 31, 2015.
The Academy of Korean Studies will cover the cost of registration, lectures, accommodations, and meals during the program as well as expenses incurred during field trips and excursions. Participants are responsible for their own travel expenses, including the round-trip airfare and transportation fee between the airport and the Academy of Korean Studies.
