The School of Languages and Cultures at the University of Sydney invites applications for a position as lecturer in Korean studies. The position is full-time, continuing, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation and confirmation period for new appointees. Membership of a University-approved superannuation scheme is a condition of appointment for new appointees.
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney offers one of the most comprehensive and diverse ranges of humanities and social science studies in the Asia Pacific region and is regularly ranked in the top twenty arts faculties in the world. The Department of Korean Studies in the School of Languages and Cultures (SLC) offers a comprehensive program of studies, incorporating language acquisition for learners at all levels and covering many aspects of Korean history, culture, and society.
As a lecturer in Korean studies, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the research profile of the department and teach existing Korean language courses as well as courses in other subject areas related to Korean history, culture, and society. In addition, the selected applicant will contribute to the Asian studies program in the school by offering a course in his or her field of interest in an area within the humanities or social sciences. He or she will also participate in curriculum development, administration, and the promotion of Korean studies across campus and in the wider community.
Requirements for the position include:
- Native or near-native fluency in Korean and English
- Experience in teaching Korean studies at the university level, preferably in Australia
- A Ph.D. in Korean studies or a relevant social science discipline
- Demonstrated potential to contribute to the research program of the Korean studies department and the school in an area that contributes to or complements the existing research strengths.
Shortlisted applicants will be asked to provide evidence of their capacity for excellent teaching and a sample of research writing in English. Candidates may be requested to do a teaching demonstration as part of the interview process.
The position carries a competitive remuneration package of $104,644 — $124,263 per annum (consisting of a base salary Lecturer [Level B]: $88,426 to $105,004, leave loading, and up to 17 percent employer’s contribution to superannuation).
