The School of Lan­guages and Cul­tures at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Syd­ney invites appli­ca­tions for a posi­tion as lec­tur­er in Kore­an stud­ies. The posi­tion is full-time, con­tin­u­ing, sub­ject to the com­ple­tion of a sat­is­fac­to­ry pro­ba­tion and con­fir­ma­tion peri­od for new appointees. Mem­ber­ship of a Uni­ver­si­ty-approved super­an­nu­a­tion scheme is a con­di­tion of appoint­ment for new appointees.

The Fac­ul­ty of Arts and Social Sci­ences at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Syd­ney offers one of the most com­pre­hen­sive and diverse ranges of human­i­ties and social sci­ence stud­ies in the Asia Pacif­ic region and is reg­u­lar­ly ranked in the top twen­ty arts fac­ul­ties in the world. The Depart­ment of Kore­an Stud­ies in the School of Lan­guages and Cul­tures (SLC) offers a com­pre­hen­sive pro­gram of stud­ies, incor­po­rat­ing lan­guage acqui­si­tion for learn­ers at all lev­els and cov­er­ing many aspects of Kore­an his­to­ry, cul­ture, and soci­ety.

As a lec­tur­er in Kore­an stud­ies, the suc­cess­ful can­di­date will be expect­ed to con­tribute to the research pro­file of the depart­ment and teach exist­ing Kore­an lan­guage cours­es as well as cours­es in oth­er sub­ject areas relat­ed to Kore­an his­to­ry, cul­ture, and soci­ety. In addi­tion, the select­ed appli­cant will con­tribute to the Asian stud­ies pro­gram in the school by offer­ing a course in his or her field of inter­est in an area with­in the human­i­ties or social sci­ences. He or she will also par­tic­i­pate in cur­ricu­lum devel­op­ment, admin­is­tra­tion, and the pro­mo­tion of Kore­an stud­ies across cam­pus and in the wider com­mu­ni­ty.

Require­ments for the posi­tion include:

  • Native or near-native flu­en­cy in Kore­an and Eng­lish
  • Expe­ri­ence in teach­ing Kore­an stud­ies at the uni­ver­si­ty lev­el, prefer­ably in Aus­tralia
  • A Ph.D. in Kore­an stud­ies or a rel­e­vant social sci­ence dis­ci­pline
  • Demon­strat­ed poten­tial to con­tribute to the research pro­gram of the Kore­an stud­ies depart­ment and the school in an area that con­tributes to or com­ple­ments the exist­ing research strengths.

Short­list­ed appli­cants will be asked to pro­vide evi­dence of their capac­i­ty for excel­lent teach­ing and a sam­ple of research writ­ing in Eng­lish. Can­di­dates may be request­ed to do a teach­ing demon­stra­tion as part of the inter­view process.

The posi­tion car­ries a com­pet­i­tive remu­ner­a­tion pack­age of $104,644 — $124,263 per annum (con­sist­ing of a base salary Lec­tur­er [Lev­el B]: $88,426 to $105,004, leave load­ing, and up to 17 per­cent employer’s con­tri­bu­tion to super­an­nu­a­tion).
