Korea Specialist Librarian Position at the University of Hawai‘i

The Uni­ver­si­ty of Hawai’i at Manoa Library is accept­ing appli­ca­tions for a full-time, tenure-track, posi­tion as Korea spe­cial­ist librar­i­an (Librar­i­an II or Librar­i­an III) begin­ning August 1, 2008. 

The hold­er of this posi­tion works with the fac­ul­ty and stu­dents at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Hawaii who study and research Korea; pro­vides pro­fes­sion­al ref­er­ence ser­vice at the Asia Col­lec­tion ref­er­ence desk as sched­uled; and responds to ques­tions and requests for infor­ma­tion and research assis­tance from fac­ul­ty, stu­dents, and the gen­er­al pub­lic. The librar­i­an in this posi­tion works with the oth­er area spe­cial­ists in the Asia Col­lec­tion, is active­ly involved in depart­men­tal affairs, and par­tic­i­pates in library-wide activities. 

The Korea spe­cial­ist librar­i­an offers spe­cial­ized bib­li­o­graph­ic instruc­tion to stu­dents in Asian stud­ies, Kore­an stud­ies, and oth­ers with needs for such instruc­tion. The librar­i­an works in coöper­a­tion with oth­er Asia Col­lec­tion librar­i­ans and the teach­ing fac­ul­ty to devel­op spe­cial­ly tai­lored instruc­tion­al pro­grams and pre­pares spe­cial­ized bib­li­o­graph­ic guides in print and online to aid in instruction.

Col­lec­tion devel­op­ment respon­si­bil­i­ties include exam­in­ing new­ly pub­lished mate­ri­als in all for­mats relat­ed to Korea in human­i­ties and social sci­ences sub­ject areas and mak­ing deci­sions regard­ing which pub­li­ca­tions to pur­chase or make avail­able for the library. Knowl­edge of the strengths and weak­ness­es of the col­lec­tion and teach­ing and research inter­ests at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Hawai’i are essen­tial to per­form­ing this task. The Korea spe­cial­ist librar­i­an works with Kore­an pub­lish­ers and is expect­ed to be
knowl­edge­able about Kore­an pub­lish­ing trends. The librar­i­an par­tic­i­pates at the nation­al lev­el with oth­er Korea spe­cial­ists and in consortia.

The librar­i­an in this posi­tion is expect­ed to be famil­iar with recent devel­op­ments in infor­ma­tion tech­nol­o­gy, com­pe­tent in Web page devel­op­ment and main­te­nance, and knowl­edge­able about dig­i­ti­za­tion and its appli­ca­tion to libraries.

Min­i­mum qual­i­fi­ca­tions: Librar­i­an II: ALA accred­it­ed MLS or inter­na­tion­al equiv­a­lent. Librar­i­an III: ALA-accred­it­ed MLS or inter­na­tion­al equiv­a­lent. Min­i­mum of three years of post-MLS expe­ri­ence in a research library. Twen­ty-four post bac­calau­re­ate cred­its of aca­d­e­m­ic study in an Asia-relat­ed field. 

Appli­cants at either rank: Abil­i­ty to read and trans­late Kore­an-lan­guage research mate­r­i­al, work with Eng­lish-lan­guage mate­ri­als, and roman­ize Kore­an char­ac­ters. Excel­lent Eng­lish-lan­guage com­mu­ni­ca­tion skills. Abil­i­ty to coör­di­nate the work of oth­er staff, includ­ing stu­dent helpers. Enthu­si­asm for work­ing in an inno­v­a­tive and chang­ing environment.

Desir­able qual­i­fi­ca­tions: Knowl­edge of the Kore­an book trade. Expe­ri­ence writ­ing and receiv­ing grants. Famil­iar­i­ty with con­sor­tial resource shar­ing arrange­ments. Pre­vi­ous ref­er­ence and bib­li­o­graph­ic instruc­tion­al expe­ri­ence in a spe­cial­ized col­lec­tion. Knowl­edge of oth­er East Asian or rel­e­vant Euro­pean lan­guages, espe­cial­ly Russian.

Salary is com­men­su­rate with qual­i­fi­ca­tions and expe­ri­ence. Librar­i­ans have fac­ul­ty sta­tus and are mem­bers of the fac­ul­ty col­lec­tive bar­gain­ing unit, the Uni­ver­si­ty of Hawai’i Pro­fes­sion­al Assembly.
