The University of Hawai’i at Manoa Library is accepting applications for a full-time, tenure-track, position as Korea specialist librarian (Librarian II or Librarian III) beginning August 1, 2008.
The holder of this position works with the faculty and students at the University of Hawaii who study and research Korea; provides professional reference service at the Asia Collection reference desk as scheduled; and responds to questions and requests for information and research assistance from faculty, students, and the general public. The librarian in this position works with the other area specialists in the Asia Collection, is actively involved in departmental affairs, and participates in library-wide activities.
The Korea specialist librarian offers specialized bibliographic instruction to students in Asian studies, Korean studies, and others with needs for such instruction. The librarian works in cooperation with other Asia Collection librarians and the teaching faculty to develop specially tailored instructional programs and prepares specialized bibliographic guides in print and online to aid in instruction.
Collection development responsibilities include examining newly published materials in all formats related to Korea in humanities and social sciences subject areas and making decisions regarding which publications to purchase or make available for the library. Knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of the collection and teaching and research interests at the University of Hawai’i are essential to performing this task. The Korea specialist librarian works with Korean publishers and is expected to be
knowledgeable about Korean publishing trends. The librarian participates at the national level with other Korea specialists and in consortia.
The librarian in this position is expected to be familiar with recent developments in information technology, competent in Web page development and maintenance, and knowledgeable about digitization and its application to libraries.
Minimum qualifications: Librarian II: ALA accredited MLS or international equivalent. Librarian III: ALA-accredited MLS or international equivalent. Minimum of three years of post-MLS experience in a research library. Twenty-four post baccalaureate credits of academic study in an Asia-related field.
Applicants at either rank: Ability to read and translate Korean-language research material, work with English-language materials, and romanize Korean characters. Excellent English-language communication skills. Ability to coordinate the work of other staff, including student helpers. Enthusiasm for working in an innovative and changing environment.
Desirable qualifications: Knowledge of the Korean book trade. Experience writing and receiving grants. Familiarity with consortial resource sharing arrangements. Previous reference and bibliographic instructional experience in a specialized collection. Knowledge of other East Asian or relevant European languages, especially Russian.
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Librarians have faculty status and are members of the faculty collective bargaining unit, the University of Hawai’i Professional Assembly.
