Foreign Language and Area Studies Scholarships for 2011–2012

The appli­ca­tion form for the For­eign Lan­guage and Area Stud­ies (FLAS) schol­ar­ships award­ed through the School of Pacif­ic and Asian Stud­ies is now avail­able on the UH Star fel­low­ship site. The dead­line for apply­ing for FLAS schol­ar­ships for the 2011–2012 aca­d­e­m­ic year is Feb­ru­ary 1, 2011.

To locate the appli­ca­tion form, log on to and go to “key­word search.” In the search win­dow, enter “FLAS” to get to “SPAS For­eign Lan­guage and Area Stud­ies (FLAS).” Click on the “apply” but­ton and respond to twen­ty ques­tions.

To receive a FLAS schol­ar­ship, one must be a U.S. cit­i­zen, nation­al, or per­ma­nent res­i­dent enrolled full-time in an under­grad­u­ate or grad­u­ate pro­gram at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Hawaii at Manoa and must be study­ing an eli­gi­ble East Asian (Kore­an, Chi­nese, Japan­ese) or South­east Asian lan­guage dur­ing the award peri­od. Academic-year fel­low­ship recip­i­ents must take at least one lan­guage course and a match­ing area stud­ies course each semes­ter, and sum­mer fel­low­ship recip­i­ents must enroll in a for­mal inten­sive language-training pro­gram with 120 hours of instruc­tion at the advanced lev­el, or 140 hours of instruc­tion at low­er lev­els, for a peri­od of six weeks or longer.

This year, the appli­ca­tion process is entire­ly on line, and appli­cants for FLAS schol­ar­ships in Kore­an need not sub­mit addi­tion­al doc­u­men­ta­tion to the Cen­ter for Kore­an Stud­ies, as was done in pre­vi­ous years.
