Hawaii Quilt to Busan Quilt

The Center for Korean Studies will host a week-long exhibition of student work that seeks to form a craft connection between Hawaii and Korea. The exhibit, titled Hawaii Quilt to Busan Quilt, will be on display in the Center’s lobby from February 4 to February 11, 2014.

The show is the work of students in the World Textile course in the Craft Design Department at Kyungsung University in Busan. According the teacher of the course, Jeeun Kim, assistant professor of textile design at Kyungsung, the students studied the history and background of Hawaiian quilts and then applied those characteristics to create quilts reflecting aspects of their hometown. The resulting creations combine some of the distinctive patterning and motifs of Hawaiian quilts with subjects, techniques, and themes connected with the environment and societal influences of Busan.

An opening reception for the student artists is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on February 4.

The Center for Korean Studies is located at the intersection Maile Way and East-West Road on the University of Hawaii Manoa campus. For additional information, telephone the Center at (808) 956-7041.
